Stanley Tucci’s ‘Genius’ Sandwich Is the Easy, No-Brainer Recipe You Need

If there’s one thing we know about Stanley Tucci, it’s that he’s going to eat a sandwich. Honestly, it seems like if he’s not eating pasta, it’s because he’s eating a sandwich instead. Hey, we’re here for those kinds of easy recipes—especially when carbs are involved.

So, if you’ve already exhausted your Tucci sandwich recipe Rolodex of grilled cheese, peanut butter, and the delicious “desert island” meal of prosciutto, mozzarella, pesto, and basil on sourdough, the actor recently shared a video making a lunch that he was “so excited” to eat. Welcome to the rotation, Stanley Tucci’s tuna melt.

How To Make Stanley Tucci's Tuna Melt

Sorry, Matthew McConaughey, but there’s a new tuna recipe in town. Except Tucci’s version doesn’t have any frozen peas or chopped apples in sight.

Instead, the Tucc opts for a pretty traditional tuna salad recipe that he sandwiches with cheese between two slices of bread.

“I have tuna that’s in brine or in water—you want to get the whitest tuna you can,” he says in the Instagram video. “Red onion, celery, salt, and mayonnaise, a little bit of pepper.”

For the tuna, a simple canned Albacore variety—like StarKist or Bumble Bee—will be the “whitest tuna,” but Light Tuna would also work, it just might have a slightly different flavor.

Just mix the tuna, diced red onion, diced celery, mayo—we know Tucci loves Hellmann’s—salt and pepper together until well combined. Then spread the tuna onto one piece of bread—Tucci doesn’t mention the bread type, but it looks to be some sort of hearty wheat or sourdough—and top with two slices of cheese. The Oscar winner uses Emmental cheese.

Place the other slice of bread on top of the cheese, then spread butter on the outside of the slices and toast. Tucci uses a panini press to make cooking easy and get the tuna melt extra melty and toasty. However, if you don’t have a panini press, you can cook the sandwich in a skillet and simply press the sandwich down with a heavy frying pan or some plates.

“I’m so excited about it,” he said while making the sandwich. “The first time I had one of these was when I was in college. I didn’t know they existed [until] I had a girlfriend who made one. I thought it was a disgusting combination when you spoke of it, and now, I realize that it’s genius.”

Tuna melts are a classic for a reason, since the ingredients are so affordable and the recipe itself is so simple. It’s no wonder even celebrities have their favorite way to make one.

There’s no surprise here when we say we agree with Tucci when he says, “You really can’t beat a Tuna Melt on a grey January Thursday…” Or any day of the week for that matter.
