As the Kansas City Chiefs try to make NFL history by winning three Super Bowls in a row this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles, we're reminded of the first time the Chiefs took on the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII—better known as the "Kelce Bowl."
In 2023, the Kelce brothers, Chiefs tight end Travis and former Eagles center Jason, made history as the first brothers to play against one another in a Super Bowl. That Super Bowl run brought us the brothers’ podcast, “New Heights,” the “Kelce” documentary on Amazon Prime Video, and many memorable moments.
But, maybe most importantly, their mother, Donna Kelce, became an overnight phenomenon. Between her half-Chiefs-half-Eagles jersey and her quip that she was rooting for “the offense” during the big game, the country couldn’t get enough of Mama Kelce.
Then, during Super Bowl weekend, Mama Kelce famously brought her sons each a batch of her homemade chocolate chip cookies. She was asked about the sweet moment in multiple interviews—the most asked question, of course, being what’s the recipe?
Donna Kelce gave a few tips in an interview with “NBC Washington,” saying she uses a pretty standard chocolate chip cookie recipe with a few minor tweaks.
“I use both cake flour and regular flour. I take the butter and melt it in the microwave, and it just makes the cookies creamier,” she said. “I add white chocolate and milk chocolate chips, and I also put a little bit of cinnamon. Then I let the dough sit in the refrigerator overnight so all the flavors mesh in together.”
As Travis gears up for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, no one has forgotten about Mama Kelce’s almost-famous chocolate chip cookies.
When asked if his mom made the cookies for him this year, Kelce responded, “Oh, you know it, you know it. Never played a Super Bowl without them,” according to People.
So, with Mama Kelce's cookies back in the spotlight, it's time to resurface her recipe, which she shared on the Today Show in 2023.
“These are amazing,” Today weatherman Al Roker said after trying them.
“These are awesome,” former Today host Hoda Kotb agreed.
Mama Kelce’s cookies are the perfect dessert to bring to your Super Bowl party—along with Taylor Swift’s chai cookies—to cheer on the Chiefs. Here’s how to make Mama Kelce’s chocolate chip cookies—and how we would make them again after giving the recipe a whirl.
We Tried Mama Kelce's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Like Mama Kelce said, everyone has a standard chocolate chip cookie recipe. For some, it’s their grandmothers’ tried-and-true, and for others, it’s the one found on the back of the Nestlé Toll House (or, as “Friends” fans know, “Nestlé Toulouse”) bag. For me, it’s our Best Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe.
As it just so happens, Mama Kelce’s cookie recipe is pretty similar to my go-to—even down to adding the baking soda to warm water. However, with the addition of cinnamon and the mixture of white and milk chocolate chips, Mama Kelce’s flavors take the cake.
I did have a small snafu with the cookie dough being a bit too wet, meaning I had to add extra flour, but other than that, the cookies turned out great with flavor and texture. I’d never describe a chocolate chip cookie as “creamy,” as Mama Kelce did—but she’s on to something. The center is gooey, just how I like my chocolate chip cookies to be, and keeps that consistency even after they’ve cooled.
Overall, because of the minor dough issue, I’d probably stick with my Best Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe—but use the techniques Mama Kelce recommended because the flavor is the true winner.
