Time to take out your purse forks.
Trader Joe’s just released a brand-new mini sheet cake. The petite desserts launched in 2018 and have since become a favorite among shoppers. They’re beloved for their convenient size and range of flavors, including Lemon and Chantilly Cream Vanilla Bean, and seasonal options such as Carrot Cake and Pumpkin Spice.
The treats are so good, in fact, they sparked the “purse fork” movement, where eager customers packed their own utensils just so they could indulge in the dessert right after leaving the store. Trader Joe’s has introduced a new craveable flavor, and fans are already racing to try it.
Trader Joe’s Yellow Mini Sheet Cake
Welcome, Yellow Mini Sheet Cakes, to Trader Joe’s tiny dessert lineup. The yellow cake base features buttermilk, making every bite tender and moist. Each 14-ounce cake is topped with a generous layer of fluffy, chocolate buttercream icing that can easily be decorated with sprinkles for a festive finish.

Not only is the flavor new, it’s also gluten-free—a milestone for Trader Joe’s as it’s the first time the retailer has offered a gluten-free mini sheet cake. A blend of rice flour, potato starch, cornstarch, and tapioca starch stand in for traditional flour to achieve a light and fluffy texture.
According to Trader Joe’s website, it took more than 10 attempts to perfect the recipe but it was worth the effort. “The resulting cake truly stands up to the expectations established by its predecessors,” the retailer wrote in the product description.
Fans React to Trader Joe’s First Gluten-Free Mini Sheet Cake
In a recent Reddit post, fans were thrilled to see the new variety, and many of them are excited that it’s something they can now eat. “OMG, finally a gluten-free sheet cake. I’ve always been sad that I could never try the much-talked-about Trader Joe’s sheet cakes. Can’t wait to try this,” wrote one thrilled shopper. “I literally gasped and will be going straight there after work tomorrow,” added another.
A few who have already tasted the cake chimed in with their thoughts. “Sooo good. Better than the regular mini sheet cake. Very moist,” noted one fan. One unimpressed Redditor said it was “pretty crumbly and dry,” but is “glad there’s a gluten-free option for people.” An Instagrammer also praised this point, saying that the product is a convenient way to offer a gluten-free dessert at gatherings: “[They are] perfect for birthday parties… $6 for [gluten-free] cake, and sprinkles always makes things more fun! Ending up paying way less than in a bakery.”
It’s not clear if the Trader Joe’s Yellow Mini Sheet Cake is a limited-time offering, but we do know the new items tend to fly off shelves. So, don't forget to add it to your shopping list so you can have your cake—and eat it, too. Preferably, with a fork, straight from your purse.
