You may have noticed that the candy aisle is looking a bit different these days. While we will never turn down a Butterfinger or Reese’s cup, multisensory candy is undeniably having a moment. Multisensory candy, defined by the National Confectioners Association (NCA) as treats that have unique textures and flavor combinations, are becoming increasingly popular and taking up more shelf space than ever before.

Nerds Gummy Clusters, for example, launched in 2020 and quickly became a favorite among candy lovers everywhere. The poppable clusters feature a chewy, fruit-flavored center and generous coating of tart Nerds that keep you coming back for more. Additionally, freeze-dried candy like Skittles Pop’d have exploded on the market, offering fans an intense taste experience and airy crunch you can’t find anywhere else.

Now, Sour Patch Kids, a brand known for its unique collabs and innovative flavors, has revealed its latest creation and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

Sour Patch Kids Strawberry Watermelon Glow Ups

Sour Patch Kids Strawberry Watermelon Glow Ups will soon head to stores. And we don’t mean “glow up” in terms of style—the candy itself glows. The chewy gummies feature edible confetti that illuminates under a blacklight. But don’t worry, there isn’t anything unsafe used to make it shine. According to a recent press release, the magic ingredient is turmeric extract, a flavorless addition that powers the glow without muting the iconic sour-then-sweet taste.

Fans are having mixed reactions to the first-of-its-kind candy. Some are eager to try it and others are unsure. “I’m…kinda concerned,” wrote one Redditor. Another user reassured any doubts by saying many edible products glow under a blacklight, including lemon juice and tonic water.

On Instagram, food insider @snackolator posted the news and commenters were quick to share how they would enjoy the glowing treat. “This would be pretty cool for a party, bowling place, or club!” said one excited fan. “Roller rink candy,” added another. “Do we glow under the blacklight once eaten?” joked another person.

No blacklight? No problem. For this launch, Mondelez International teamed up with Snapchat to create a blacklight filter so you can experience the candy’s glow even if you don’t have a traditional purple bulb.

Sour Patch Kids Glow Ups will be available online starting March 5 and will roll out to major retailers later this month, along with Swedish Fish Mini Strawberry-Watermelon Glow Ups.
