No matter how frequently you order Jersey Mike’s, it seems like there’s always something new to learn about the brand. Some days, that’s being introduced to a new sandwich, while others, it’s learning about a menu item that will change your order forever—we’re talking about you, cherry pepper relish.
However, whether you’re ordering your tried-and-true sub or opting for a viral social media sandwich, there’s one thing that ties all Jersey Mike’s orders together: Mike’s Way.
What Is Jersey Mike's 'Mike's Way?'

All Jersey Mike’s subs are fully customizable, from the bread down to the extra add-ons and ingredients. But, the standard way to order a Jersey Mike’s sandwich is “Mike’s Way.” That means in addition to the meat and cheese, the sub is automatically topped with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil, vinegar, and a blend of seasonings.
Mike’s Way has been the Jersey Mike’s standard since the first restaurant, Mike’s Giant Submarine Shop, opened on the Jersey Shore in 1956. When 17-year-old Peter Cancro bought the sub shop in 1975 and began expanding the business, he made sure the recipe remained authentic to the original owner, and Mike’s Way became a staple.
The fresh veggies are a standout at Jersey Mike’s, but what really sends the chain to fan-favorite status is the oil, vinegar, and seasonings that add incredible extra flavor. It’s not hard to guess that Jersey Mike’s uses olive oil and red wine vinegar to flavor its sandwiches, but what about the seasonings that adorn the toppings? It’s a much simpler blend than you might expect.
What Is 'Mike's Way' Seasoning?
Jersey Mike’s proprietary blend of spices isn’t as complicated as KFC’s secret blend of 11 herbs and spices or even Chick-fil-A’s breading and marinade process. Instead, it’s two simple seasonings you also have in your pantry: oregano and salt.
That’s right, to top off its Mike’s Way subs, Jersey Mike’s simply adds a sprinkle of herbaceous oregano and simple table salt.
With so many Italian-Americans living in New Jersey, it’s no surprise that the original sub shop uses the aromatic herb. And, while you might have assumed Jersey Mike’s opts for an Italian seasoning blend on its subs, the oregano alone does the trick.
Because Jersey Mike’s offers made-to-order sandwiches, even if you don’t want your sub fully loaded Mike’s Way, you can always add the seasonings—or opt for one seasoning over the other.
But if a simple sprinkle of oregano and salt is all it takes to create world-class subs, we’ll be sure to remember that next time we try to recreate a turkey club at home.
