With the changing weather, you might be starting to get more hopeful about venturing outdoors. Whether you’re looking forward to baseball picking back up, planting your garden, or simply being able to walk outside without freezing, the official start of a new season has us all buzzing like spring’s bees. As for me, I’m excited to uncover my grill and enjoy dining al fresco. But beyond the grill, my absolute favorite part of these warmer days is playing pizzaiola with my Ooni pizza oven.
Ooni, founded in 2012 by way of a Kickstarter campaign, boasts top-of-the-line ovens in various sizes and with different fuel types and functionalities. They’re so beloved that our writer named the Ooni Koda her top pick after years of testing.
One of the biggest downsides of these pizza powerhouses, however, (aside from the somewhat steep learning curve) is the price tag. Luckily, Costco is coming to the rescue just in time for a spring full of pies.
Costco Has Ooni Pizza Ovens on Sale
A Costco shopper recently spotted the Ooni Koda 16-inch propane-powered outdoor oven on the warehouse store’s shelves for $429…The very same one I spent upwards of $600 on not too long ago. While anything over $400 is still an investment, it’s the cheapest I’ve seen this model, which makes it the best time to pick one up if you’ve ever had even an inkling of pizza oven ambition. As someone who has it and loves it, I can vouch for the quality.
As writer Molly Allen describes in her review, “The exterior is constructed of durable powder-coated carbon steel, which not only makes for a sleek look but also provides protection from elements such as rain and dust,” making it a perfect addition to your deck or patio. She further explains that the L-shaped flame, paired with the cordierite pizza stone, “heats up fast, reaching temperatures of 900 to 950 degrees F in 15 to 20 minutes.” I can confirm this, too—getting the oven started is simple. Using it to successfully churn out perfect pizzas is where things get a bit tricky, but a few trials will have you cooking like a pro in no time.
My biggest tips? Get an infrared thermometer to check the temperature (my sweet spot is around 825 degrees F), and properly flour the bottom of your pizza dough so it slides off the peel and into the oven seamlessly. And don’t walk away, the Ooni serves up a fresh, piping hot pie in minutes.
Comments on the social post are mixed, with many surprised at the price. But the reviews on the product page—where the Ooni is also available to order online—speak for themselves.
“I can’t believe that I waited this long to buy an Ooni! Then again, Costco wasn’t selling this until last month when I saw it online at costco.com. This makes fabulous pizza, as well as steaks and veggies too! My neighbors are now planning to buy one.”
Others added, “Fun to cook on, just do not blink as pizza is ready in under a minute! It is fun to experiment with different dough recipes and toppings,” and ensured, “Excellent quality and fun to use when entertaining. Costco had the best price, and we received it within a couple of days.”
The $429 Ooni Pizza Oven is undoubtedly a splurge, but if you have someone in your life who loves to sling a pie, keep this in mind for the next special occasion (Mother’s and Father’s Day are right around the corner!) Considering the oven is typically $600, Costco is the place to score this find. Plus, just think of the money you'll save on pizza delivery.
