Key Takeaways
- Costco's latest copycat dish takes on a Michelin-starred restaurant's world-famous featured fish.
- A box of the prepared frozen dinner entrée costs one-tenth of restaurant pricing per serving.
- The best way to cook it takes less than ten minutes.
While you can’t beat the real thing from a favorite restaurant, I am a big fan of a solid copycat meal from the grocery store. Costco has some pretty good dupes on its shelves, like those Cluckin’ Tasty Spicy Chicken Sandwiches that taste exactly like those from Chick-fil-A. You can also use Costco finds to easily recreate restaurant-style pasta dishes for pennies at home. However, even the wholesaler doesn’t stock substitutes for Michelin-starred meals…usually.
Now that’s all changed, but not for much longer. Costco’s latest dinner find is so good that many fans are comparing it to a top restaurant (one of my favorite places for a fancy night out, in fact), so I had to look into it.
Costco’s Alaskan Leader Seafoods Miso Marinated Black Cod
Costco’s Alaskan Leader Seafoods Miso Marinated Black Cod gives the globally-renowned Nobu restaurant some serious competition. Costco’s miso-glazed black cod costs only a fraction of what is served on Nobu’s menus, yet reportedly comes close in quality.
On a recent Reddit thread, one commenter said the cod from Costco is “Pretty much identical” to the one on the Nobu menu. “We do sushi nights at home and serve the nobu style black cod recipe occasionally. This would be the best substitute I could ever ask for.”
You don’t have to be looking for a Nobu copycat to appreciate this Costco version. Many are thrilled with the cod simply because “it was delicious,” and its ease of preparation has helped it become a “favorite” new dish. Another went so far as to say it “is the best frozen fish” they ever had.
The miso marinated fish comes in a family-size box with five individually wrapped pieces for about $23. Depending on the location, a piece of black cod with miso can cost between $46 and $49 at a Nobu restaurant. That’s a savings of more than $40 per plate.
One Reddit user said while they were initially "skeptical of this product bc of the price," they were pleasantly surprised when "the fish was flaky and thawed out easily." Another fan was happy they took a chance and "can’t wait to stock up on this."
You can bake or grill this cod, however air frying seems to be the real winner with Reddit users. One person said they air-fried it at 500 degrees F for 7 to 8 minutes and the result was “perfection.” The directions on the packaging suggest serving this with bok choy and jasmine rice, but you may also find asparagus and shiitake mushrooms to be the perfect pairing with this black cod.
It’s unclear if this marinated cod will be permanent, so if you also want to grab a few boxes for the freezer, better do so while you can. And if you do miss it, take it as an opportunity to buy fresh fish and make a miso-glazed black cod Nobu copycat dinner from scratch. It’s easier than you’d think.
