McDonald’s drops a steady supply of hearty burgers and craveable beverages, but fans know that sometimes to get the tastiest meal, you have to go off-menu. Yep, we’re talking menu hacks such as asking for a steamed burger bun and elevating your breakfast sandwich with one easy swap. The newest McDonald’s hack that has social media buzzing is surprisingly not food-related. The trick transforms a regular McDonald’s Sprite into a drink reminiscent of your favorite carnival treat, and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to order.

What Is the McDonald’s Cotton Candy Sprite Hack?

Fans are customizing McDonald’s Sprite with French vanilla syrup, and some believe it tastes like cotton candy. If you’ve seen posts depicting a vibrant blue or multi-colored beverage topped with pink cotton candy, don’t be fooled. Those are images made by creators, not actual photos. When you order a cotton candy Sprite from McDonald’s, the resulting beverage will look exactly like a regular Sprite.

So, does it actually taste like the beloved fair food? Social media’s @hellthyjunkfood doesn’t think so. “It’s not cotton candy, it’s just vanilla Sprite,” said the disappointed Instagrammer. Others agreed that the flavor isn’t as expected. “It’s good but doesn’t taste like cotton candy,” said one member of a content creator duo who recently tried the drink. The pair then added a splash of Powerade and said that with the addition, the beverage tasted more like the nostalgic spun sugar treat.

Some, however, think the vanilla is enough to achieve the flavor. “Wow, that’s awesome,” said a YouTuber reviewer after taking a sip. “That is really good. I was not ready for it to actually kinda taste like cotton candy. It still tastes more like vanilla than cotton candy, but this is awesome,” they added.

How Did the McDonald’s Cotton Candy Sprite Trend Start?

It’s not clear where the idea originated, but one TikTok video from 2022 shows a worker trying the unique combination. “It actually tastes like cotton candy,” they said with a surprised look after taking a sip.

In the comment section, one person pointed out an interesting piece of information that could explain the unexpected taste. “The vanilla syrup was recalled because it got mixed with something. Customers said they tasted something fruity or cotton candy in their coffee,” said one user. Another chimed in to say they experienced the same at their location. “I am a manager at McDonald’s, and this is indeed true. We had to throw out an entire shipment of it.”

In a Reddit thread from the same year, a customer asked if anyone else had noticed something was off with the coffee. “I mostly go to McDonald’s for their vanilla iced coffees. However, I’ve noticed recently that my drinks have a fruity/floral taste to them. I’ve had this issue in McDonald’s in Oklahoma and Minnesota. Does anyone know if the vanilla syrup or anything else about the coffee was changed?” they wrote.

In another thread, even more customers agreed that the vanilla coffee syrup tasted fruity. “I am a consumer and reported last Sunday that the sugar-free [syrup] tasted like some sort of berry flavor. I took the coffee back, and the staff smelled the syrup and said it smelled like cotton candy. They opened a new bottle, and that one smelled like cotton candy as well. They made a new coffee for me, and it tasted like cotton candy. I tried it again later in the week, and it tasted the same. I went back this morning and they told me it was recalled,” one Redditor wrote.  Additionally, the post contained an image of a notice received by restaurants, which detailed the affected products and included the French vanilla syrup and its sugar-free counterpart.

While there doesn’t appear to have been an official recall, based on guests' experiences, it seems plausible that the issue with the syrup could have been responsible for the cotton candy flavor at the time.

How to Order a Cotton Candy Sprite at McDonald’s

Instagrammer @mouthattack explained how to order the drink so you can see for yourself if the combo is worth the hype. “Simply order a Sprite and ask your server to add three pumps of vanilla syrup. The result? A bubbly, refreshing drink that tastes just like cotton candy—perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth,” they wrote. While there’s no indication of what size cup is ideal for the three pumps, many social media users reviewing it appear to have a large Sprite, however, some have opted for a medium instead.

There is one catch, though. If you want to try this menu hack, you won’t be able to order it for delivery or pickup. You’ll have to place the order in person because this customization is not an option through the app. While you’re there, why not try the new McCrispy strips and McDonald’s new lemonade, too? Sounds like a plan, if you ask us.
