Lucky for us, there’s no official pie season. This flaky dessert is a 365-day-a-year delight, but varieties of pies can be seasonal. Sure, you can make a pumpkin pie in May, but you would be much more likely to see that pie in the fall, especially around the holidays. Apple pie is also something to enjoy year-round, but it’s most associated with fall when apple trees are bursting with ripe fruit.
Last fall, Trader Joe’s carried Teeny Tiny Apple Pies in stores that one shopper called “kryptonite.” Now, TJ’s is leaning into some of spring’s most popular fruit with its newest edition of Teeny Tiny Pies.
Trader Joe’s Teeny Tiny Strawberry Rhubarb Pies
What fruit pies are associated with early spring? Strawberry rhubarb is top of mind. The combination of sweet seasonal strawberries and tart rhubarb is classic in pies, cobbler, coffee cake, muffins, jam, and more. It’s no surprise that Trader Joe’s is tapping into this lovely seasonal pairing, too.
Its new Teeny Tiny Pies feature 3-inch handheld pies filled with strawberry and rhubarb, wrapped in a crust that’s topped with crunchy sugar. When Instagram’s @traderjoestreasurehunt shared a photo of the new pies, they suggested heating them up and serving them with a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream, which sounds pretty heavenly if you’re asking us.
According to Trader Joe’s website, the chain suggests topping the mini pies with homemade strawberry whipped cream made with freeze-dried strawberries for “bursting-with-flavor strawberry whipped cream!”
Over on Reddit, fans are already singing praises for the new treat. “Got these yesterday after seeing this post and they are SO good. 10000/10 recommend!” one Redditor shared.
Another added, "These are so much better than the hand pies they did last year. We had them last night – 5 mins in [the] air fryer & a scoop of vanilla ice cream was perfect."
"They’re so good I ate the whole box yesterday," admitted someone else.
If you're already thinking about dropping everything to head to TJ's, we have some good news. While these pies are technically a seasonal product, the neighborhood grocer has said we'll be able to find these tiny treats in stores all summer long, until September, just in time for the apple ones to come back!
