A quick guide on how to make s’mores in the oven (plus my favorite chocolate to use). These decadent, golden brown and identically beautiful, campfire-like s’mores are super fast and just as toasty delicious as the classic outdoor favorite!

A nostalgic summer-time treat that can be enjoyed year round thanks to your indoor oven!

S’mores have long been a favorite treat of mine. They were one of the first things I learned to make as a kid. Slowly and carefully roasting them in a rotisserie art sort of way over the hot coals of campfire during the summer. Then in the winter over the coiled burner of an electric stovetop, and at times I may have even settled for a melted marshmallow quick zapped in the microwave to make them.

One method many of us have been missing out on is this simple broiled option on a baking sheet. And might I add toasting the marshmallow on two sides of course not just one as other guides have shown.

There are many things to love about this simple oven method of making s’mores. You’ll get the same golden brown toasted goodness without being campfire cooked, you still get that ooey gooey fluffy melty marshmallow sweetness along with its pairing of rich luxurious chocolate, and crisp honey kissed graham crackers to hold it all together.

And bonus, you can make many at once versus making one or two on a roasting stick! I’ve listed out 6 servings but make up to 12 at time if you’d like.

These are perfect for when the cravings strike without all the hassle of packing up and venturing into the outdoors to build a campfire. They are beyond easy and always a popular favorite!

Possible Additions

With s’mores you can add so many different fun additions. Try layering one of these options over the top or spreading over the second graham cracker:

  • Fresh fruit such strawberries, raspberries, or bananas
  • Nutella
  • Nut butter such as peanut butter or almond butter
  • Lemon or raspberry curd
  • Jam
  • Toasted coconut
  • Caramel
  • Chocolate candies (in place of chocolate) such as Reese’s or Ghirardelli Caramel Chocolates
  • Melted chocolate chips to replace chocolate squares

How to Make S’mores in the Oven

Grease a baking sheet lightly with non-stick cooking spray.

Leave oven rack in center of oven, preheat broiler for 2 to 3 minutes.

Place marshmallows on baking sheet (laying sideways or upright depending on which way they’ll be most level on their tops for even browning).

Transfer to oven and let toast until golden brown, don’t walk away from them and keep a close eye on them. Remove as soon as golden brown.

How Long to Bake S’mores in the Oven

It only takes about 30 seconds to 2 minutes to broil marshmallows on the center rack of an oven to melt and toast them. Time will vary depending on the oven brand and model, and the batch of marshmallows.

Note that if the oven rack is set closer to the broiler they will brown faster, I found the center of the oven worked best for more even baking.

Lay 6 graham cracker halves out. If you want melty runny chocolate add chocolate pieces over the 6 graham crackers, if you want more solid chocolate then add it at the end as noted.

Turn marshmallows to opposite side (golden toasted side now facing down) and set marshmallow on top of the 6 graham crackers (or over chocolate also if you wanted melted option). Return to oven and let toast until marshmallows are just golden brown. Remove from oven.

Add chocolate (if not added already) over the top of the toasted marshmallows. Layer remaining 6 graham crackers over the top and sandwich the layered s’mores together.Oven S’moresOven S’mores

Tips for the Best Oven S’mores

Good quality chocolate: My number one tip is to use good quality chocolate it will make all the difference. A go-to favorite for these is Lindt chocolate. The intense orange is a dream paired with a s’more!

Broiling tip: Don’t walk away while broiling. The marshmallows can toast in a flash and can go from caramelized brown to a blackened char that’s bitter and ashy.

Marshmallows tip: When picking out a bag of marshmallows look for one that has excess air and the marshmallows aren’t flattened and stuck together in a sticky mess. When picking out the marshmallows from the package to toast look for those even in size so they brown evenly.

Non-stick spray: Use non-stick spray instead of parchment paper as it can catch fire when broiling. The spray will also work better than aluminum foil to prevent the marshmallows from sticking since they’ll be toasted solo on one side first.

Melting the chocolate: If you want melted chocolate you can do one of two things, add it over the first graham cracker (underneath the marshmallow) when you toast the marshmallow the second time. Or toast the other graham cracker (just to the side of the s’mores) so it’s warmed and will partially melt the chocolate once sandwiched over the top.

How to Store S’mores

For the flavor and texture of an authentic s’more they should be served shortly after preparing.

They will however still be good for up to 5 days if stored in an airtight container once cool, they may just go a little stale.
